The Series 600 Training System, ModeI EB-609, guides students through a program of schematic reading, experiments and troubleshooting exercises.

The system fosters an understanding of diesel truck schematic diagrams and the logical troubleshooting techniques needed to maintain and repair today's complex electrical systems.

The Diesel Truck Electrical Wiring course is designed for students who have completed the Degem Electrical Concepts Course or equivalent and have an understanding of basic electrical concepts.

Description

The Training System consists of a training simulator, courseware package and computer. The Training Simulator presents a diesel truck electrical system, including fuses, connectors, switches, indicators and lights.

The simulation demonstrates normal and malfunctioning electrical operation. Voltages and resistances can be measured using a digital multimeter.

A test light and continuity tester are provided to familiarize the student with typical diesel truck equipment test procedures. A video monitor and keyboard provide the instructor with an efficient lab management system.

The Competency-Based Courseware Package includes a student lab manual, instructor's manual and user's guide. The Lab Manual, used in conjunction with the training simulator, provides a complete course of study from basic concepts learned through system experiments, to troubleshooting exercises using flowcharts.

The Instructor's Manual provides guidance in the effective use of the training system. Complete experiment results, answers to questions and troubleshooting flowcharts are also included.

System components

  • A pictorial on the student panel displays a typical diesel truck

  • electrical wiring system.

  • Components, connectors and terminals within the system are clearly and realistically portrayed to maximize training effectiveness.

  • System components include:

  • Digital multimeter

  • 12 volt test light

  • Continuity tester

  • Battery and numerous connectors

  • Head/turn/backup/park lights, clearance and dome light

  • Switches including: ignition switch, turn signal switch and gear switch

  • Controls including: brake pedal, air pressure, parking brake, door lamp assembly and door open

  • CB/relay panel

  • Customer complaint panel

Experiment Mode

The Degem competency-based curriculum includes a student lab manual with experiments illustrated with schematics and diagrams.

Each experiment in the lab manual has an objective, set up procedure, technical discussions, lab worksheets for the student’s measurements and calculations, student questions and chapter summaries.

The experiments cover the following areas:

  • Meter operation, 12 volt test light operation and continuity tester operation

  • Electrical components

  • Electrical circuits: series, parallel and combination

  • Electrical system faults: opens, shorts, bad components and high resistance

  • Electric components and their schematic symbols

  • Diesel truck wiring harness

  • Troubleshooting methods

  • Practicing troubleshooting methods

Troubleshooting Mode

An advantage of the EB-609 training system is that abnormal operation scenarios can be quickly selected by the instructor.

Conditions difficult to create with actual equipment or mock-ups can be created repeatedly by a simulated system.

Over forty malfunctions can be categorized as follows:

  • Opens

  • Shorts

  • Bad components

  • High resistance connections

  • Malfunctions can be implanted in the fuses, connectors, switches, components and actual wires in the harness.

Some of the malfunctions can be categorized as follows:

  • Horn problems

  • Turn signal problems

  • Cab interior problems

  • Clearance lamp problems

  • ID lamp problems

  • Wiper problems

Tracking Student Performance

The Degem training system provides the capability to track student activities. The selected experiment's elapsed time and the replace/repair attempts are tracked by the computer. The student’s name, activities, date and class can be displayed on the monitor and printed on the optional printer to provide a permanent record of the student's performance.
