The Series 600 Training System, Model EB-603, is intended to guide students through a program of schematic reading, experiments, and troubleshooting exercises.

The system fosters an understanding of automotive schematic diagrams and logical troubleshooting techniques needed to maintain and repair today's complex electrical systems.

Description

The Training System consists of a training simulator, integrated courseware package and computer. The Training Simulator presents an automobile wiring harness, including fuses, connectors, switches, indicators and lights. The simulation demonstrates normal and malfunctioning electrical operation.

Voltages and resistances can be measured using a digital multirneter. A test light and continuity tester are provided to familiarize the student with typical automotive equipment test procedures. A video monitor and keyboard provide the instructor with an efficient lab management system.

The Courseware package includes a student lab manual, instructor's manual and user's guide. The Lab Manual contains objectives, technical discussions, set up procedures, measurements and calculation sheets, troubleshooting flow diagrams, questions and summaries.

The Instructor's manual offers guidance and insight into the use of simulator and courseware package as well as complete experiment results, answers to questions and troubleshooting flow logic to the student lab manual.

System Components

A pictorial on the student panel displays a typical wiring harness as it would appear in a modern automobile. Components, connectors and terminals within the system are clearly and realistically portrayed to maximize training effectiveness.

System components include:

  • Digital multimeter

  • 12 volt test light

  • Continuity tester

  • Battery, fuse box, numerous connectors

  • Head/turn/tail/reverse/park/hazard lights, vanity and dome light

  • Switches including; head/park light switch, turn signal switch, and hazard switch

  • Controls including: brake pedal, hood open, trunk open, door open, and glove box open

  • Warning lights to indicate improper technique when using meter,12 volt test light or continuity tester

Experiment Mode

Degem integrated courseware includes a student lab manual with many experiments. The lab manual is illustrated with schematics and diagrams.

Each section in the lab manual includes an objective, technical discussion, set up procedure, pages for the student's measurements and calculations, and summary questions.

The experiments cover the following areas:

  • Meter operation, 12 volt test light operation and continuity tester operation

  • Electrical components

  • Electrical circuits; series, parallel and combination

  • Electrical system faults; opens, shorts, bad components and high resistances

  • Electrical components and their schematic symbols

  • The automotive wiring harness

  • Troubleshooting method

  • Practicing basic troubleshooting techniques

Troubleshooting Mode

  • An advantage of the EB-603 training system is that the instructor can quickly select abnormal operation scenarios

  • Conditions difficult to create with actual equipment or mock-ups can be created repeatedly by a simulated system

  • Sixty malfunctions can be introduced at the touch of a button

The malfunctions can be categorized as follows:

  • Open

  • Short

  • Bad component

  • High resistance connection

  • Malfunctions can be inserted into the fuses, connectors, switches, components and actual wires in the harness

The troubleshooting exercises are divided into the following sections:

  • Headlight subsystem

  • Interior lights subsystem

  • Front & back turning signals/stop lights/ hazard lights subsystem

  • Front & back corner lights/parking lights / backup lights subsystem

  • Tracking Student Performance

Degem training system provides the capability to track student activities. The selected experiment's elapsed time and the replace/repair attempts are tracked by the computer. The student’s name, activities, date and class can be displayed on the monitor and printed on the optional printer to provide a permanent record of the student's performance.
